Here is something the experienced painting contractors know, it is easy to get jobs in the spring, summer and fall. It is not so easy to get jobs in the winter. There are lots of reasons for this problem for painters, such as the holidays are over and people have spent their money. Another reason is because people are waiting for their IRS refund check. They can’t open windows. At any rate the reasons for painting businesses to slow down is not important. What is important is to be aware of this problem long before it is wintertime. Actually the time to prepare for this is all year however, fall is a good time to start if you have not been planning for the winter months up to now.
The one thing common among painting contractors is that most are very active people, always on the move. There is a problem with this type of personality, and this is the habit of not stopping for a half hour or so, now and then and planning and thinking, and I share this trait. We have to make the time, perhaps one time a week to just sit down aloneprev, not in front of the television and think about where we are now, what we are doing now, what we are doing to improve our business, and what our plans are for future business.
Many times when I was first starting, I would be involved in my day to day painting, and finish a job, only to realize that I was so engrossed in that paint job that when I was done and paid, I woke up to realize I didn’t have any more work scheduled. I didn’t have anything to do and I had to really hustle to fill in my schedule. Well this happens to us all on a larger scale, when we are busy throughout the year only to finish our end of year jobs and realize we are looking at a cold dark winter with no jobs. All this comes from being so busy that we don’t think about future work. It isn’t because we are lazy or anything else it is because in the spring time we are happy to be busy after a slow winter. Summer we are just busy with everything including work, which continues into fall.
